James has been competing in track and field for 10 years. He enjoys the technical side of events and the training and drills just as much as competing. His current specialties at a New Zealand level are decathlon and hurdles and he currently ranks 1st in NZ for Decathlon and 4th for the 300m hurdles at the U18 level. He won the Mahar Cup for the Most Outstanding Athlete in 2021 and is currently Marlborough Senior Athletics Athlete of the year, and Marlborough Junior Athletics Age Group Champion for the 15-year-old boys and Tasman Group Champion for 2021. His coaches are impressed at his quiet ability to be prepared mentally and physically for his events, at his focus, and how he takes great personal satisfaction from improving personally and achieving his goals. James aspires to break the U18 decathlon record in 2023 and ultimately go to the world games in Hungary in 2023.
